It takes a great number of people to show up in their kindness to help keep the VITA tax sites running smoothly each year. Central Maine CA$H Coalition is fortunate to get people from many different backgrounds showing up to help. This year, 2016, we were very pleased to have a couple of students from a local high school join our ranks of volunteers. One teen, in particular, showed great dedication, great skill, and great capacity for kindness in fulfilling her commitment as a greeter and intake facilitator during our CA$H Clinics.
The Board of Directors and Staff at United Way of Mid-Maine were so impressed that they awarded their 2016 Young Leaders Award to her. Given each year to a promising young leader who demonstrates and promotes leadership and community involvement among Mid-Maine’s youth, and who exemplifies a passion to make a difference, the Young Leaders Award was presented to Alexandria Brann.
Alex is a sophomore in high school and an active member of Messalonskee High School’s Key Club, Concert Chorus, and GSA club. She has done volunteer work at the James H. Bean School, the Central Maine and Capital Area CA$H sites, and at community events raising awareness for domestic abuse. Alex is a member of the MHS Robotics Team “Infinite Loop” and has helped with their fundraising to attend the National Championship competition.
She has attended student leadership conferences, spoken on a student panel at a state-wide education conference, and attended workshops at local colleges with teachers and community members. This year, she participated in student focus groups and took dual enrollment courses through KVCC and Thomas College.
Alex is a shining example of youth leadership, and an inspiration to those who know her, youth and adult, alike.
Thank you, Alex, from all of us at United Way of Mid-Maine!
