The United Way of Aroostook (UWA) recently held their annual meeting in Presque Isle. Funding and awards were presented to 18 local organizations. Aroostook CA$H was one of the local organizations who received an award.
“Each year the UWA selects one individual to be our volunteer of the year based primarily on service to the community and the amount of time spent on projects benefiting the people of Aroostook County. This year our decision was very easy, it was not an individual, but instead a team, our tax team. They worked hard all year and we wanted to celebrate their success.” says Sherry Locke Executive Director of UWA. Aroostook CA$H was presented with the outstanding volunteer award for their work preparing taxes for nearly five hundred Aroostook County families that includes and educating them about programs in the community that can increase their income, reduce debt, and build savings.
Aroostook CA$H stood out this year with the work they did due to a 41% increase in the amount of tax returns filed as well as a virtual tax site which provided additional access to more remote county residents for the first time.“Our preparers gave hundreds of hours of their time to help their friends and neighbors in need, the true definition of a volunteer. It was our pleasure to make this wonderful team the United Way of Aroostook Volunteers of the Year!” says Sherry Locke, Executive Director of UWA.
